A few weeks ago I wrote about a project where I put arms and legs on buildings in Melbourne. Well, here’s another project where I apparently couldn’t resist adding legs to inanimate objects!
Devon contacted me after seeing some of my plant of the week sketches on Pinterest. She was starting up a little business selling the offspring of a spider plant she had inherited from her beloved grandmother, affectionately named Pam.
Funnily enough, I’ve also received a spider plant from my grandmother. These plants grow their babies at the end of their long, snake-like fronds, so you can pluck them off and make as many babies as you like.
The brief
Devon contacted me all the way from Minnesota which blows my mind. Sometimes the internet is a literal hellhole, and sometimes it brings you connections with people you’d never expect.
Devon wanted a few simple sketches of the different ‘baby’ spider plants to use in her marketing, as well as one of Pam in all her glory.
I completed the sketches pretty quickly, with each of the plants having roots in case she wanted them to sit by themselves. Then I got an idea…
Just add legs
I loved Devon’s 70’s-style brand she’d put together for her business. I kept thinking about how Pam looked like a big head of hair and pictured her with flared jeans.
As a bonus for Devon, I sketched each of the planties with legs and sent it through with the rest. She was completely on board with the idea!
Putting it all together
I shipped the illos to Devon, and shortly after was pleasantly surprised to see her designs for t-shirts that combined the illustrations with the branding elements. It all worked perfectly together!

Aren’t they amazing?! Find them here.
Honestly this was one of those dream projects where everything happens super quickly and with minimum fuss. I don’t even think Devon had any revisions on what I sent through. More clients like this, please!
I’m not sure what Devon is up to these days, or if the Pam Fam is still going, but good on her for starting a little business and creating something so cool.
